Taoism and Buddhism on human transcendence

Be yourself; be natural; live in accordance with your true, good, and best nature’                             (Lao-tze’s formula for the achievement of happiness and divine union)

Students please watch the short film from You tube, Flight from Shadow by Chuang Tzu  about Oriental Philosophy that incorporates Buddhism and Taoism and students be guided by this principles.  (for students without internet they can read the story below)

FLIGHT FROM SHADOW

There was a man who was so disturbed by the sight of his own shadow and so displeased with his own footstep that he determined to get rid of both. This method he hit upon was to run away from them.

So he got and ran. But every time he put his foot down there was another step, while his shadow kept up with him without the slightest difficulty.

He attributed his failure to the fact that he was not running fast enough. So he ran faster and faster, without stopping until he finally dropped dead.

He failed to realize that if he merely stepped into the shade, his shadow would vanish, and if he sat down and stayed still, there would be no more footsteps.

Transcendence is going beyond ones limitation and capacity. It is possibility.  Man experience difficulties and limitations in life. Can man overcome pain and suffering? “There are three methods to gaining wisdom. The first is reflection, which is the highest. The second is limitation, which is the easiest. The third is experience, which is the bitterest. “ (http://www.brainyqoute.com, n.d.)

Transcendence can also mean spirituality, “And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.” 1 Corinthians 2:13

Lao-tze (604-571 BC) is a scholar and a thinker who preached thevirtue of passivity, humility and frugality. His teachings are known as Taoism because their real concern is the Tao (The way of Heaven or the word of God). The Tao is not a god but a supreme power and governing principle of the Universe. Confucius said that “All things come from Tao and return to it, but does not act as their own master. It is smaller than the small and greater than the great. Tao lies hidden and cannot be named, yet, it can transform and perfect all things.”

Buddha is Prince Siddhartha Gautama of India. His thought came from Hinduism. Buddhism a philosophy and a religion based from Buddha’s teaching.   In contemplation he attained enlightenment and “The four noble truth” was created:

                   1. Life will eventually lead to suffering

                   2. The cause of suffering is desire/craving

                   3. Suffering ends when craving ends.

                   4. Reaching Enlightenment is achieved by following the eight fold path.

                   The eight fold path:

                            1.Right thought,

                            2.Right understanding,

                             3. Right speech,

                             4. Right action,

                             5. Right effort,

                             6. Right livelihood,

                             7. Right mindfulness,

                            8. Right concentration

Oriental philosophy is about embracing oneself and transcendence, that the body can overcome pain and its limitation. Through meditation and contemplation one can free himself from the bondage of bodily pressure. Qi (Chi) is the principle of the driving life force that makes one transcend.
